Keynote : Building a Culture of Innovation

There are few more working environments with greater personal impact and pressure than paediatric surgery, but Alder Hey Clinical Director of Innovation Iain Hennessey uses that pressure to develop new treatments and drive innovation.

He will deliver this keynote on building a culture of innovation using his personal experience, from starting a surgical simulation company as a trainee to forming partnerships with multinationals such as Sony and IBM.

Join Iain to hear about his unique underground innovation facility for collaboration with the tech sector and how he developed a team of clinician entrepreneurs to drive change within the NHS.

Presenter: Dr Iain Hennessey, Clinical Director of Innovation at Alder Hey Children's hospital

Iain Hennessey is a Consultant Paediatric Surgeon, Clinical Director of Innovation at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, and Honorary Associate Professor (Lead for Healthcare Technology and Design) at the University of Liverpool.

He graduated from the University of Edinburgh with honours degrees in Medicine, Surgery and Anatomical sciences, before going on to train as a paediatric surgeon in the United Kingdom and Australia.

He has always been interested in innovation, and as a trainee helped to found a start-up surgical simulation company.

As Clinical Director of the Alder Hey Innovation Hub he has formed partnerships with multi-national companies such as Sony and IBM, building a unique underground 1000sqm innovation facility for collaboration with the tech sector and developing a team of clinician entrepreneurs to drive change within the NHS. This work has been recognised with a Health Service Journal Improving care with technology award.
